Electrician requirements

Electrician requirements to obtain an electrical licence are simple. They are not framed to prevent electricians from obtaining the licence but to make the electrician more competent and reliable.

In Texas, the Department of Licensing and Regulations is the umbrella licensing authority for all trades in the State of Texas. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and ECRA is a state regulatory agency that currently oversees over twenty types of businesses, industries, trades and occupations. The agency is responsible for issuing licenses, conducting inspections, investigating complaints, assessing penalties, setting rules and standards and holding hearings on the breach of conditions by the licensees.

Presently, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations has five licensing categories for electricians. They are Master Electrician License, Journeyman Electrician License, Residential Wireman License, Maintenance Electrician License, Apprentice Electrician License and the Electrical Contractor License. 
 
An applicant for a license as a master electrician credit must have at least 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician, plus he should have held a journeyman electrician license for at least two years and still pass a master electrician examination administered in keeping with the State law. On obtaining the licence a master electrician may perform all electrical work, including electrical work performed by a master sign electrician, supervise an electrician, verify compliance with on-the-job training requirements for issuance of a master electrician license form, master sign electrician license, journeyman electrician license, or journeyman sign electrician license, and serve as a master or record for an electrical sign contractor.

An applicant for a license as a journeyman electrician must have at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job customer training under the supervision of a master electrician and pass a journeyman electrician examination conducted by the State authorities Requirements. An heavy equipment training schools applicant for a license as a residential wireman electrician must have at least 4,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or residential wireman electrician and pass a residential wireman examination conducted by the State authorities. An applicant for a license as a maintenance electrician must have at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or maintenance electrician and pass a maintenance electrician examination held by the State Authorities.

Finally, an heavy equipment operator training application for a license as an electrical contractor must be licensed under the Texas state Electrical Safety and Licensing Act as a master electrician or employ a person licensed under the Act as a master electrician, establish proof of financial responsibility in the manner prescribed by the executive director and maintain workers' compensation coverage for the contractor's employees through an insurance company authorized to engage in the business of insurance in this state or through self-insurance. 

A person who holds a master electrician licensed issued or recognized under the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act may only be assigned to a single electrical contractor, unless the master electrician owns more than 50 percent of the electrical contracting business.
