There are several types of training for electricians. The lowest in the rank is an apprentice electrician. An apprentice electrician as the name itself indicates is a person who is learning or practising to be an electrician at a future date. The period of work apprenticeship lasts at least three years. This person cannot undertake any electrical work on his own. He is not competent to do the work of an electrician on his own. However, he can work under the direct supervision of a qualified electrician. On successful completion of the apprenticeship he can sit for the examination to become a Journeyman Electrician. During the period of apprenticeship if the person is found to be not active he will be asked to leave. If he shows signs of picking up work, his period of training can be reduced and will be able to apply to sit the examination.

Let us now look at the jobs description that an electrician generally does, assuming that the Managerial electrician has the licence to do so. The general duties of an electrician employment are electrical wiring of commercial and residential buildings and related equipments. Electrical wiring generally means to fix the necessary wires using conduits to carry electricity from point A to pint B. This provides power to various equipments and fittings in a home, office or factory. To do this work the electrician must be fully conversant with the State regulations with regard to the types of materials that are used to do the wiring. 

A journeyman electrician is the first level of a qualified electrician. An education Careers journeyman electrician can install transmission lines for electrical equipment, assemble, install and repair electric lights, motors, heaters, generators, transformers, switchboards and other electrical appliances. A journeyman electrician can be called to troubleshoot electrical systems in homes or buildings they master these skilled trades. He can also work in to operate electrical power generating plants, construction, maintain an electric shop and operate electrical equipment. A military journeyman electrician can advise in the selection and storage of electrical equipment.  He can make rough sketches and estimate the cost of minor electrical installations like carpenter estimates and keep simple records and make reports; and instruct and lead unskilled assistants. A journeyman electrician can employ under him and supervise apprentice electricians. He can sign their certificates after completing the required training period.
